Fertility Services

For investigation of suspected fertility problems, referral details must be completed for both partners by your GP (even if partners are registered with different GPs, either GP may refer).
Your GP will have to ask lots of personal questions and will need to organise blood tests and swabs for the female (twice in the same menstrual cycle) and semen analysis for the male.
Patients may be eligible to receive NHS funded assisted conception only if they meet the following criteria:
  • Co-habitating couple who have been in a stable relationship for and trying for a baby for more than 2 years (Includes same sex couples)
  • Neither partner has any living children (this includes adopted children but not fostered) from that or any previous relationship
  • Female partner has to be aged between 18-42 years and have BMI 19-30
  • Neither partner been sterilised and undergone (unsuccessful) reversal
  • No previous assisted-conception treatment
  • Patient is covered by Immigration Health Surcharge arrangements.
Whilst undertaking investigations, you both should consider healthy lifestyle interventions such as smoking cessation, weight management and abstaining from alcohol use and the mother to be should be taking folic acid (0.4mg/day) and Vitamin D (10mcg/day) supplements.  (Higher risk patients e.g. BMI > 30 or with certain health conditions may require 5mg folic acid/day.)
